The Special Collections Research Center is organizing a show-and-tell of items from the Landscape Architecture Archive for display at the College of Design this Friday, November 17.

The event is in honor of the first annual Lewis Clarke Lecture, named after influential professor and practitioner Lewis Clarke, whose collection is one of the largest at SCRC. The show-and-tell will precede the lecture, which will be delivered by Linda Jewell, FASLA, professor emerita at UC-Berkeley. Jewell was an architecture student at NC State’s School (now College) of Design when Clarke was teaching, and in 1980 she oversaw the process to nominate Clarke as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Jewell studied landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, taught at NC State, and chaired the Harvard Graduate School of Design before moving to her position at UC-Berkeley.

The show-and-tell will feature items from the Lewis Clarke Collection, including plans and drawings for the School of Design Laboratory Garden, NC Zoological Park, Saint Andrews College, Palmetto Dunes resort, Fayetteville Street Mall in downtown Raleigh, and the home garden of Henry Kamphoefner, who as founding dean of the School of Design recruited Clarke to NC State.

The show-and-tell begins at 5:00pm in the Allred Gallery, which is on the ground floor of Kamphoefner Hall in the College of Design. The lecture follows at 6:00pm in Burns Auditorium, right next to the Allred Gallery. Both events are free and open to the public.
